Writing And Selling EBooks

A recent survey has revealed that one of the top home-based jobs for 2017 is writing and selling an eBook. Who would have thought it!

Very different from writing and publishing traditional books, this is a great outlet for somebody with a lot of industry knowledge. And a handy source of extra income for your website.

For those who are new to the concept, an eBook is (usually) a fairly short publication, that can be bought and read digitally. They can still include cover art, pictures, graphs and other graphics, but don’t incur the same costs to produce as traditionally published books.

Coming Up With Ideas

If you have knowledge, or an opinion, you’d like to share, writing and selling an eBook could be the solution. The first step is to come up with an idea.

The beauty of an eBook is that it doesn’t have to be long, but it does require a real concept, if you want people to buy it. This might be related to your career, or to a hobby or interest.

Let’s say, for example, that you made a sea-change. You gave up a life and a job in the city, to move to the coast and buy a cafe or restaurant. Your journey could not only make an interesting eBook, but also an informative one.

Share Your Knowledge

In effect, you were on a learning curve when you made your sea-change. You took on an new industry, and a new skill set. The chances are that much of what you learned came through getting it wrong the first time!

Now’s your opportunity to share your experience, and the lessons you learned, through an eBook, to make the transition easier for others. And, of course, you would charge a reasonable fee for that knowledge.

Will you eBook be a one-off, or part of a series of self-help eBooks? If the latter, then Issue 1 needs to explain this, and lay out exactly what people will get for their money.

Use EBooks To Promote Your Business

If you have a consultancy-type business – say, financial advice – you might use your eBooks as a way of attracting new clients. Perhaps by booking an appointment with you, they will get a free eBook.

Do you run training courses? Your eBooks could form part of the course, with Issue 1 free with a booking confirmation.

If your eBook is part of your business plan, it should follow your branding. It should also be well researched and written, carefully edited and checked, and presented in the most professional manner. Remember, that eBook represents you and your business.

Make It Factual And Original

Unlike a work of fiction, an eBook should be factual and avoid ‘fluff’. It should also contain original content. Plagiarism is never acceptable – especially in a digital publication, as the consequences can be dire.

With the eBook written, it’s time to market and sell it. First, identify your core target market. It is potential customers and clients or, quite simply, anyone interested in your knowledge?

The next step is to price your eBook, and promote it. If you have a website, that’s a great place to start. Make sure your site has been properly set-up to easily and securely accept orders and payments.

Boost Your Income

As this is an online publication, be sure to fully optimise your eBook for search engines. You want to be sure that potential customers can find it.

You can also promote and sell your eBook through social media, a blog, or through specialist sites, such as Amazon and Free-eBooks.

Whether you simply want to share your passion, or you’re keen to boost your income, an eBook is something you should try.
