Why We All Need An Attitude Of Gratitude

We hear a lot these days about the power of positive thinking, in manifesting our life and business goals. It would be easy to dismiss it as yet more feel-good jargon, right? But maybe there really is something to it.

Have you noticed that when you’re feeling negative about life, bad stuff happens? And when you’re feeling good, positive changes take place.

One aspect of positive thinking is being grateful. The more grateful you are for what you have in life, the more you will get. Why? Because you start believing in yourself, in others, in success, and in your purpose.

US author Lewis Howes calls this an ‘Attitude of Gratitude’.

Learn To Be Grateful

In his book, The School of Greatness, he says: “Life is better if you develop an attitude of gratitude. If you concentrate on what you have, you’ll always have more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never have enough.”

So, how can you integrate this attitude into your business?

For starters, you can be grateful for having the opportunity to run your own business. It may be hard work, and stressful at times, but it is a huge achievement. Something to be very proud of.

Be Proud Of Your Team

You can also be grateful for the brilliant people who make up your team, and for your loyal customers. These two groups of people are central to the success of your business.

And when you start to feel grateful, something magical happens. That attitude manifests itself in how you treat people. You will find yourself becoming more appreciative of your employees which, in turn, will boost staff morale.

Feeling appreciated, your team will work even harder for you, and be happy to go that extra mile to make things happen.

Better Customer Service

Your attitude of gratitude towards your customers will encourage better customer service. That, in turn, will help retain more customers, and attract new ones through positive reviews and word-of-mouth.

Suddenly, you have even more to be grateful for! Of course, we’d be mad to think every day will now be perfect. But focusing on the positive helps minimise feelings of anger, fear and negativity.

There is also proof that adopting an attitude of gratitude is good for your health. A study by Professor Paul Mills – a California-based expert in behaviour and heart health – showed that the more grateful people were, the less they suffered from high blood pressure and heart disease. They also slept better and had more energy.

It’s Good For Business

Meanwhile, psychology professor Barbara Fredrickson carried out research that suggests this type of positive thinking improves our problem-solving capabilities. It also increases our capacity to take new information on board.

And that has to be good for business, right?

So why not give it a go? Grab a pen and paper and write down five things you are grateful for today. When you feel stressed, focus on those things and think positive thoughts. You’d be amazed at the results!
