Halfway through 2015 it’s a good time to take a look at what’s hot – and what’s not – in interior design.
When Is A Rug Not A Rug?
When it’s a work of art! Our TV screens are bombarded with [very loud] advertisements for cheap rugs. They probably do the job but what do they add to your home? There is actually a skill to choosing the right rug and it can make or break the look you’re trying to achieve.
Clever designers will suggest choosing a rug that is visually fluid with irregular patterns to break the grid of rectangular rooms and furniture.
Watch any TV renovation show and you’ll see big, bold patterns are in, if you’re brave enough!
But subtlety still reigns supreme in many homes, choosing instead rugs made from silk that shimmer and change colour in the light and add a whole new dimension to the room.
Mixed Metals
Mixing warm metals such as copper and rose gold with cool ones like silver is particularly hot right now. Gone are the days when you had to match every metal finish in a single room. Have the courage of your convictions and layer your textures and colours for a more stylish option.
For inspiration Google ‘steampunk interior design’ and give your home that edgy industrial feel.
Moody Blues
A growing trend in luxury homes in the USA is pairing dark navy with white marble and mother of pearl. Dark navy will also play well with other colours, such as pink, cream, gray, coral and sage.
Smoky Glass
Yes it’s back! So popular in the 70s smoky-coloured glass is making a big comeback in some of the trendiest homes around the globe. From tables to tableware, plain and practical clear glass is being given the flick.
On The Tiles
Artisan tiles are also making a comeback, as renovators incorporate them into their indoor/outdoor living spaces.
What started as a trend in the 70s and 80s – bringing a couple of colourful tiles back from your overseas holiday – has developed into a fashion statement today, with specialist tile shores selling a huge range of artisan tiles, from bright and colourful cheapies to top dollar Italian masterpieces.
Simply dot your ‘special’ in amongst your chosen wall or floor tiles and the look is yours.
