There comes a time in your life when you need to have a major clean-out. And if you’re running a business from home, this can be even more important. Perhaps you’re moving house, downsizing, moving overseas, or just can’t stand the clutter a moment longer. For some people, this is even an annual occurrence. So what do you do with all the things you no longer want or need?
There are a few different options available these days, from selling online to giving it away. And there’s certainly a knack to doing this well.
The most common way to have a clean-out is to hold a garage or yard sale at your home. This can be a great way of getting rid of unwanted items, particularly large items, while making a bit of money. However, there are a couple of unwritten rules to follow.

Items that are beyond repair are best off going to the tip or local recycling centre. Not only will people not buy them, but it will also give a bad impression for the other goods for sale.

- Check to see if you need a permit
- Sort and clean your items, and price them sensibly
- Advertise the sale through the local newspaper – many even provide signage for you
- Also advertise it online, through Gumtree and social media
Selling on Gumtree
Gumtree is another great resource for selling unwanted items, from furniture and clothing to entire houses! Gumtree is used by thousands of people throughout the world, and offers both free and paid advertisements.
This is an excellent way of selling bulky items like beds and sofas, garden furniture, vehicles and bikes, white goods – basically anything you would prefer to be picked up. It’s best to ask a fair price and move the item quickly, to get it out your way.
The best advice here is to be completely honest in your description of the item, including any faults. Remember, your potential buyer may be travelling a fair distance to come and see it. And be prepared to negotiate.
If you advertise on Gumtree, be prepared and willing to be home to show people the item.
Selling on eBay
eBay is another option, and is great for more specialist or higher priced items. You’ll see just about everything for sale on eBay, including antiques and vintage items, collections, brand new imported products, and more.
There are a couple of different ways of buying and selling on eBay. There are Buy It Now prices, and auctions. Of course, there is an element of risk involved in an online auction, but you can set a reserve.
If the item can be posted, you need to list the cost. If not, you can mark it pick-up only. A major difference between eBay and Gumtree is that more people will buy sight-unseen on eBay.
Give To Charity
If the items you are selling don’t include expensive items, why not consider donating them to a charity instead? They could make a difference to somebody’s else’s life, and save you time and effort in the process. There are many charities to choose from, just select one that you think does a good job and is willing to recycle your things to help others. That way you can feel good about giving it away.
